About this tour

Meet the Bull Shark in Playa del Carmen

For this experience you must have an Advanced Open Water certification or previous experience diving with our team. The depth reached for the encounter with the bull sharks is 30 m or 110 ft and the maximum dive time is 30 min. This is a static activity and you will remain in place while Bull Sharks swim around the shark point. This type of sharks may approach divers, which is a common behavior. If your are looking for an adrenaline rush this is the perfect activity.

Due to the fact that bull sharks visit the Mexican Caribbean in winter this experience is available form November to early February.

Note: We offer just watching activities, not feeding. At least two divers are required for this experience.

Here you have a little description of this activity:

  1. Prepare for your dive. This dive takes place in Playa del Carmen. The gear will be ready before leaving the dive center. Make sure you have everything you will use. If you need gear form us you will have time to try it before leaving Puerto Morelos.
  2. Attend the briefing. When we arrive in Playa del Carmen your dive guide will explain the safety procedures, the behaviors of bull sharks and how to react during the encounter.
  3. Gear up and enter the water. This is a short trip from the shore (only 5 min), we need to put on our suits before getting on the boat. During the trip we will gear up to be ready before arriving to the shark point. The boat will be attached to a buoy which we will use to descend.
  4. Descend and locate the sharks. Ones in the water we will use the mooring line to descend. Follow your guide and descend to find the bull sharks swimming around! Stay calm and keep your eyes peeled for bull sharks.
  5. Observe and interact safely. Maintain a respectful distance from the sharks. Stay still and avoid sudden movements to avoid startling them.
  6. Enjoy the experience. Take in the sights and capture photos, while following your guide’s instructions.
  7. Ascend safely. When it’s time to return, follow your guide’s signals for ascent. Perform a safety stop before surface.
  8. Debrief and share your experience. We will return to Puerto Morelos after the dive where we can stamp logbooks and talk about the experience! Share your photos and comments with us through a review as well!

Tips:

  • Stay Calm: Bull sharks are not the human killing machines that the movies make us think. Many shark encounters occur out of simple confusion.
  • Respect the Environment: Avoid touching the sharks or their habitat.
  • Follow Your Guide: Follow our instructions to make your dive more enjoyable and memorable

Enjoy the thrill of the encounter and appreciate the beauty of the marine world!

Diver Level:

Advanced Open Water Diver or higher.

What to expect?

Sharks are so far from the idea pictured along Hollywood movies that even the size is wrong. Sharks are curious animals and very selective with their preys. Humans are not part of their diet and they are not crazy about our blood. In fact, there are more chances of winning Powerball than being attacked by a shark. Here are some advices when you encounter a shark:

1.- Swim calm. Do not get stress they are not interested in bait you. Panicking can lead to erratic movements and send wrong information.

2. – Do not touch them. Like all marine life we own them our respect and touching them is like trespassing boundaries.

3.- Keep your arms and hands close to your body and do not move them disorderly or abrupt.

4. Do not block their path because they can not swim backwards and it can elevate their stress.

5.- Avoid flashing colors in your gear. Sharks have monochromatic vision, so it would be smart to avoid colors like white, yellow, and/or neon when swimming or diving because those may stand out more brightly in a blue ocean

6.- Enjoy it! A shark encounter is amazing and special experience, remember they are part of the ocean and we may be visiting their neighborhood.
