What to expect?

Diving the Juan Escutia shipwreck in Puerto Morelos offers a fascinating underwater experience. Here is a list about what to expect:

  1. Wreck Overview: The Juan Escutia is a former naval vessel that sank intentionally to create an artificial reef. It lies at a depth of about 27 meters (89 feet), making it suitable for more experienced divers.
  2. Marine Life: Expect to see a variety of marine species, including tropical fish, moray eels, and possibly larger visitors like rays or barracudas. The wreck attracts diverse marine life that has made it their home.
  3. Wreck Structure: The shipwreck is partially intact, allowing divers to explore different areas, including the bow, stern, and the wheelhouse. The structure provides interesting penetration opportunities, but only for experienced divers with proper training.
  4. Visibility: Generally, visibility at this site can range from 15 to 30 meters (49 to 98 feet), but it can vary depending on weather and water conditions.
  5. Diving Conditions: Water temperatures are usually warm, around 24°C to 28°C (75°F to 82°F), so a short wetsuit or rash guard is often sufficient. Currents can vary, so be prepared for changing conditions.
  6. Photography Opportunities: The wreck and the marine life around it create excellent opportunities for underwater photography. Bring a camera if you want to capture the experience.
  7. Safety Considerations: Ensure you follow all safety protocols, including checking your gear and maintaining good communication with your dive buddy and guide.
  8. Respect the Environment: As with any dive site, it’s important to respect the wreck and marine life. Avoid touching or disturbing the structure to help preserve it

Overall, diving the Juan Escutia shipwreck is a thrilling experience that combines history with marine exploration. Enjoy your dive!
